ABOUT SWIM FOR JENNY

WATER SAFETY & DROWNING PREVENTION

Accidental drowning is the leading cause of death among infants and small children in Florida, and Broward and Miami-Dade counties lead the state.

As part of our commitment to teach all kids to be safe around the water, the YMCA offers 5 Days of FREE SWIM LESSONS each year to children and adults in the community. During the Swim for Jenny Week, they are taught how to be comfortable in the water and use basic swimming skills and techniques. Skills that could be the difference between life and death.

SWIM FOR JENNY

WHO IS JENNY?

Jenny was a one-of-a-kind child. She was smart, energetic, beautiful, and blessed with a loving family. Unfortunately, Jenny lost her life because she did not know how to swim. Swim For Jenny was created to help make sure all kids know how to swim, and how to be safe around the water. The program provides families with free swim lessons for kids.

OUR MISSION

MAKE KIDS SAFER

Florida leads the nation with most child drownings of all ages (under 18) by more than double the next closest states – Texas & Arizona.

Miami Dade and Broward counties lead the nation in child drownings.

3 kids die every day from drowning in the US

64% of African American, 45% of Hispanic / Latino, and 40% of Caucasian children have little to no swimming ability.

Children ages 1-4 have the highest rates of drowning and non-fatal drowning hospitalizations.

For every child who dies from drowning, another 5 receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.

Formal swimming lessons reduce the likelihood of childhood drowning by 88%
